AI Adoption Challenges & Energy Demands Unveiled

Discover the challenges and opportunities in AI adoption across industries. Uncover the energy needs and data infrastructure demands highlighted in Pure Storage’s latest report.

Pure Storage, a trailblazer in IT delivering cutting-edge data storage technology and services worldwide, partnered with Wakefield Research to publish a fresh report uncovering the challenges that various industries encounter when embracing artificial intelligence (AI). The report sheds light on the often underestimated energy needs of this sophisticated technology.

Titled “Drivers of Change: Overcoming the Energy and Data Challenges in AI Adoption,” the report emphasizes the significance of reevaluating data infrastructure to fully capitalize on AI’s advantages, control energy expenses, and align with corporate environmental objectives.

Key findings from the survey conducted among 500 IT buyers in companies with 500+ employees across the U.S. and Europe are as follows:

  • Surging Need for Computing Power Driven by AI: 88% of AI adopters reported a significant surge in the demand for computing power. Nearly half (47%) had to at least double their computing power after adopting AI.
  • Unanticipated Energy Demands of AI: 73% of IT buyers were unprepared for the energy requirements of AI.
  • Multiple Burdens of AI: 73% of respondents acknowledged that AI necessitates or will necessitate various data management upgrades, including tools (48%), processes (46%), and storage infrastructure (46%).
  • Infrastructure Updates Due to AI: Almost all (96%) have either updated or plan to update their IT infrastructure, with 29% stating that AI requires a complete overhaul.
  • Impact on Sustainability Goals: 89% found it more challenging to meet Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals due to IT infrastructure upgrades after adopting AI. However, 60% of current or prospective AI adopters plan to invest in more energy-efficient hardware to align with ESG objectives.

Significance across industries:

AI adoption is growing across industries, but many organizations lack the necessary infrastructure to handle the data demands and energy needs critical for maximizing AI’s benefits. This shortfall poses a barrier to effectively implementing AI to support crucial corporate initiatives, including environmental objectives. Virtually all IT buyers feel compelled to reduce their carbon footprint, realizing that meeting IT objectives hinges on adequately preparing IT infrastructure for AI support.

The need for advanced infrastructure has become urgent. Legacy systems often fall short in supporting the extensive data pipelines crucial for optimal machine learning outcomes. As AI adoption continues to surge, IT teams require efficient, dependable, and high-performance infrastructure to ensure seamless deployment.

“AI is going to be a huge growth opportunity across the region. This report provides useful insights for organisations who are planning or already deploying AI projects. In the age of AI, power and data demands will grow exponentially and investing in the right AI-ready data infrastructure is critical to give your project the best chance of success.” — Nathan Hall, Vice President, Asia Pacific & Japan, Pure Storage

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technological advancement, the trajectory of artificial intelligence adoption demands a holistic approach. Bridging the gap between AI’s transformative potential and the infrastructural demands it entails is crucial. Organizations must recognize the profound impact on energy consumption and data management brought by AI, aligning their strategies with sustainability goals while investing in adaptable, high-performance infrastructure. This concerted effort ensures not only the maximization of AI’s benefits but also the realization of a more resilient, environmentally conscious future for industries worldwide. As AI continues its ascent, the convergence of innovation and responsible infrastructure becomes paramount for sustainable growth and long-term success.
