This partnership empowers Indonesia’s public sector and critical industries to leverage Google Cloud’s advanced capabilities while adhering to national security regulations.

Jakarta, August 12, 2024 – Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (“Indosat” or “IOH”) Group and Google Cloud have today announced an enhanced collaboration aimed at delivering next-generation sovereign cloud and edge cloud services across Indonesia. This partnership is specifically designed to meet the country’s rigorous data residency, security, and privacy requirements.
Through this partnership, Indosat Group will offer Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) to Indonesian organisations, addressing the unique needs of entities looking to manage AI and data-heavy workloads in their preferred locations. This initiative will enable key sectors, including the public sector, defence, healthcare, financial services, energy, utilities, and manufacturing, to accelerate digital transformation. By utilising advanced AI and analytics capabilities, these organisations can maintain full control and security over their sensitive data.
GDC is a fully managed solution that provides an extensive range of software services, flexible hardware configurations, and the option to operate in an air-gapped environment—completely disconnected from the public internet—for the most sensitive workloads. Alternatively, it can be connected between edge locations and the Google Cloud region based in Indonesia.
Indosat Group, leveraging its data centre operations, plans to offer on-premises hosting options for GDC. This will ensure that all data remains under the direct control of the customer and within Indonesia’s borders, fully compliant with the country’s legal and sovereignty frameworks, including the Personal Data Protection Law and Government Regulation No. 71.
Vikram Sinha, President Director and Chief Executive Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Group, stated, “As Indonesia progresses towards its golden era in 2045, Indosat Group is dedicated to supporting this vision through technological innovation. Our partnership with Google Cloud is rooted in the goal of empowering Indonesia by introducing the country’s first sovereign and edge cloud solutions. These solutions will provide organisations with cutting-edge infrastructure, operational features, and developer tools to scale digitalisation efforts effectively.”
Delivering Data-Intensive Workloads Anywhere
With GDC, organisations can tap into the core features of Vertex AI—Google Cloud’s enterprise AI platform—such as Workbench, Pipelines, and Predictions. This enables them to swiftly develop and deploy sophisticated machine learning (ML) and generative AI search applications, facilitating efficient data retrieval and analysis at their chosen location. Additionally, pre-trained ML models for Speech-to-Text, translation, and optical character recognition (OCR) are available out-of-the-box, supporting over 100 languages, including Bahasa Indonesia.
Moreover, organisations can access a broader array of Google Cloud’s hardware and software resources, crucial for the seamless deployment of AI applications in an air-gapped environment or at the edge. These resources include Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), NVIDIA Tensor Core GPUs, the portable AlloyDB Omni database engine, and Dataproc for running open-source data analytics.
Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive Officer of Google Cloud, remarked, “Indonesia’s public sector and regulated industries demand solutions that adhere to strict data sovereignty and regulatory standards. Our partnership with Indosat Group will introduce cutting-edge, locally-based sovereign cloud and edge cloud solutions, empowering public sector and regulated organisations to drive digital transformation on their own terms. Our secure-by-design distributed cloud infrastructure, coupled with Indosat’s technological expertise, will help businesses enhance data analysis, uncover insights, boost productivity, and run modern AI applications effectively.”
