Explore Slack’s global workplace research uncovering diverse personas like Singapore’s adaptable Road Warriors and information-savvy Detectives.
Slack has unveiled fresh global research aimed at delving into diverse workplace approaches and personalities, examining their influence on the preferences of desk workers and the adoption of technology, including AI.
In a YouGov survey encompassing over 15,000 desk employees across nine markets and commissioned by Slack, Singapore emerges as a high-ranking global hub for a workforce comfortable with building virtual connections and thriving in diverse work settings. This workforce archetype, labeled ‘The Road Warrior,’ constitutes 26% of Singapore’s workforce, prioritizing flexibility above all else.
The defining traits of Singapore’s Road Warriors predominantly involve working away from their desks (91%) and choosing to work wherever suits their schedules best (46%). They identify themselves as adaptable (85%) while being recognized by colleagues as the ones most likely to work from different locations (26%).
Interestingly, despite being the most prominent persona globally, ‘Detectives’ are less prevalent in Singapore. Only 21% of Singapore’s workforce fit this category—individuals who possess a penchant for seeking and sharing information—compared to 30% globally. This difference is partly attributed to Singapore’s comparatively younger workforce; Detectives are more common among older workforces. Similarly, India, with its younger workforce, also exhibits a lower percentage of Detectives (16%).
This persona is characterized as highly organized (94%), preferring independent problem-solving (85%). Sharing information within their team and swiftly accessing relevant information are the top priorities for Detectives. Colleagues perceive them as the best at uncovering information (42%) and most likely to be aware of all happenings within the company (52%).
Singapore stands out globally as the second-highest user of AI in the workplace, with workers expressing a desire for more training and support. The research highlights that a quarter of desk workers worldwide are presently engaged with AI (26%), with Singapore (34%) and India (54%) leading in usage.
Despite this, a significant majority of desk workers globally express concerns about AI (80%) and feel their companies are not doing enough to address these concerns (73%). Worries range from potential adverse impacts (29%) to concerns about accuracy (29%), data security (27%), uncertainty about capabilities (27%), and job security (19%) if AI becomes more prevalent.
Nevertheless, 58% of desk workers worldwide anticipate using AI in the future. Notably, the identified personas in the research exhibit differing attitudes toward the adoption of new technology like AI. Detectives and Road Warriors feel the least supported in the integration of new technology, with 15% of each group globally feeling their companies provide inadequate training or information. This emphasizes the need for Singaporean businesses to better comprehend the training and skill gaps requiring substantial support, especially in effectively introducing AI.
Derek Laney, Slack Technology Evangelist, APAC, Salesforce, comments: “Irrespective of the size—from five to 5,000 employees—every workplace harbors a distinct ecosystem of personalities, skills, and work styles. Recognizing these differences is crucial for businesses aiming to foster an empowering environment for their staff in Singapore’s culturally diverse workforce. Acknowledging that no two employees work alike, leaders should embrace flexible management approaches and versatile technologies to enable individuals to leverage their unique strengths at work.”
The evolving landscape of workplace dynamics, as illuminated by Slack’s comprehensive research, underscores the significance of acknowledging individual differences and preferences in fostering a thriving work environment. Singapore’s diverse workforce exemplifies varying personas, from the adaptable Road Warriors to the information-driven Detectives, reflecting the need for tailored approaches in embracing technological advancements like AI. As businesses navigate this transformative era, the key lies in embracing flexibility, providing targeted support, and leveraging versatile technologies to empower every employee, ensuring they harness their unique strengths for collective success in an ever-evolving professional sphere.
